Rbench
The Responsive workbench is a very large stereoscopic display that enables
several viewers to share a common stereoscopic viewing environment. It is also
a platform on which we can explore the integration of virtual objects into a
real world setting. 3D objects are made to appear life size as if sitting atop
the surface of a large table (6 feet wide by 4-1/2 feet deep). Shadow casting
and lighting cues are used to enhance the illusion that objects are resting on
the surface of the table. The system allows users to interact with these
objects via data glove and various types of pointers.
This work was inspired by Wolfgang Krueger's work at the GMD, but seeks to
enlarge the viewing space from a stereo window to a stereoscopic volume.
Experimental prototypes of the windowed version of the bench were produced for
NASA and Stanford. The ImmersaDesk is a commercial implementation of that
design.
